Pokémon: Ghost Grey Version is a GBA ROM Hack set in a decayed version of Kanto, 50 years after the events of Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. Inspired by the horror-themed creepypastas and edgy ROM hacks of the late 2000s and early 2010s, Ghost Grey offers an original story, a completely redesigned world, over 200 Ghost Pokémon, a new soundtrack, updated mechanics, and countless secrets to uncover.

Story

Welcome to Kanto in the year 2049. Fifty years after the events of Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, the once vibrant region has become a decayed and haunting place. Ghosts, ghouls, and dangerous individuals now roam the region, while the people who remain are broken and seemingly trapped with nowhere to escape.

Despite the horrifying state of the region, the journey initially appears familiar. Earn 7 Gym Badges, catch Pokémon, and become the Champion. But as you explore the corrupted version of Kanto, you'll discover that this is far from an ordinary Pokémon adventure.

Technical Changes

  • Modified Type Chart: Steel resists Ghost and Dark like it did before Generation 6, Psychic is no longer weak to Ghost as it was in Generation 1, and Fairy only resists Dragon instead of being immune to it.
  • Ghost vs. Ghost: Ghost-type attacks deal 1.5× damage against Ghost Pokémon instead of the standard 2× effectiveness.
  • No EVs or IVs: EVs and IVs have been removed from the game. All Pokémon have 0 IVs and cannot gain EVs through battles or items.
  • No Breeding: Eggs and Pokémon breeding are not available.
  • Move Power Changes: Dark Pulse and Crunch have been reduced from 80 to 70 base power.
  • New Moves: Several original moves have been added, including Purify, Shatterpoint, Soul Shift, and Jumpscare.
  • Purify: A physical Psychic-type move that applies Foresight to the target when it hits.
  • Shatterpoint: A physical Psychic-type move that replaces Brick Break.
  • Soul Shift: A Psychic-type U-turn-style move.
  • Jumpscare: A Ghost-type move based on Fake Out.

Admin Experience

I haven't played Pokémon Ghost Grey yet, so I can't give an honest personal review of the game. However, there are very less horror Pokemon games that are actually scary. Also, the concept of this game immediately stands out thanks to its dark take on Kanto, original Ghost Pokémon, completely redesigned visuals, and horror-inspired atmosphere. The large number of original regional variants and the extensive postgame also make this one worth checking out for players looking for something very different from a traditional Pokémon ROM hack.
